Coupled and uncoupled welding simulations with solids and shells. Uncoupled examples show mapping of temperatures from one process to another.

Coupled welding with solids

This example shows the process of creating a weldingseam by means of welding a square profile onto a plate. In this case the whole geometry is modelled with solid elements. The heat source of the welding device is generated with *BOUNDARY_THERMAL_WELD_TRAJECTORY. The constitutive model *MAT_THERMAL_CWM is used for the welding seam.

Coupled welding with shells

This example shows the process of creating a weldingseam by means of welding a square profile onto a plate. Beside welding this case shows the use of thermal thin shells for the profile an the plate, which do not consider a thermal gradient over the shell thickness (check example ASDF for more about thermal thick and thin shells). The heat source of the welding device is generated with *BOUNDARY_THERMAL_WELD_TRAJECTORY. The constitutive model *MAT_THERMAL_CWM is used for the welding seam.

Uncoupled Welding linked with binout

This example is based on the welding simulation with solid elements. In this case an uncoupled analysis is performed. Means that first the temperature fields are calculated in a thermal analysis and then mapped to the nodes in a stand-alone structural analysis to calculate the deformations. The binout file from the thermal analysis is referenced as the source of the temperature fields for the mapping with *LOAD_THERMAL_BINOUT in the structure analysis. This feature is available with versions R12.0 or higher.
