Advanced examples

This folder contains challenging examples that often involve mutliphysics (coupling with other LS-DYNA solvers) or complex CFD (turbulent problems, high boundary layer mesh resolution). Many of those examples are representative of industrial problems or show some state of the art validation problems. Access to heavy computational resources and good knowledge of the ICFD solver and LS-DYNA is required before tackling those problems.

Advanced : Flow through a funnel

In this coupled DEM particles-CFD free surface example, water is being poured in a funnel filled with Styrofoam spheres causing stirring and flow deviation.

Advanced: Fluid Elastic Body Interaction

This case is an extensive benchmark problem featuring a rolling tank with an elastic plate in between. The oscillations of the plate are studied. Due to the extensive computational time required in order to study this problem, it is frequently presented in 2D. However, the version offered here is in 3D, highlighting the powerful capabilities of the solver in handling mesh movement and remeshing as well as strong coupling fluid structure interaction. 32 CPUs or more are recommended in order to run this problem.

Advanced: Tuned Liquid Damper

The tank, initially in equilibrium, is free to rotate and its movement is induced by a weight that has a prescribed periodic movement along an initially horizontal rail attached to the rotation center of the tank which periodically displaces the center of gravity. The breaking waves and sloshing dynamics of the fluids placed inside the tank affect the damping characteristics of the system. It is recommended to use at least 16 CPUs for this problem.

Advanced : Pillar submerged in deep sea

In this example, a partially submerged pillar vibrates due to the periodic incoming waves. Strong FSI coupling is mandatory since the densities of the solid and the fluid are very close.

Advanced : Blood flow

In this example, blood flow through an artery. The Carrreau non newtonian model has been chosen to model the blood. Windkessel type boundary conditions have been imposed on the different vessel outlets symbolizing the external blood load. Use LS-DYNA version R10.1 or later.

Advanced : Drivaer Model

The DrivAer is a modern generic car model that has wind tunnel experimental results for a large number of different configurations which are letter-codded. The model shown here is F_D_wM_wW meaning fastback rear end with detailed underbody with mirrors and wheels.

Advanced : Wind Turbine

Sliding mesh is a technique that prevents excessive re-meshing in problems that involve rotating parts and is frequently involved in turbomachinery or for wind turbine simulations. The ICFD solver's capabilities have been extended in order to make the solve of such applications possible. This example features a wind turbine with prescribed rotation

Advanced : Centrifugal Blood Pump Flow

Sliding mesh is a technique that prevents excessive re-meshing in problems that involve rotating parts and the ICFD solver's capabilities have been extended in order to make the solve of such applications possible. This example features an internal flow application of a centrifugal blood pump.

Advanced : Jet Impingement model

In this conjugate heat transfer model, an oblique jet impact a hot wall and causes cooling to occur. Viscosity of the fluid varies with temperature. After 0.5 seconds, once it is assumed the jet has achieved a form of steady flow, the update of the momentum and pressure equations is frozen while the conjugate heat transfer solve proceeds. This allows to save calculation times, especially in cases that require long transient time for the thermal solve.

Advanced : Heart Valve

Thanks to its advanced and integrated fluid structure interaction capabilities, LS-DYNA's ICFD solver is capable of successfully solving highly non linear FSI problems such as artificial heart valves and addressing its numerous challenges : strong pressure gradients, similar solid and fluid material densities, thin leaflets that undergo strong deformations, extensive mesh deformation and frequent remeshing, gap leakage treatment and so forth.
